Day 1: Monday, February 23rd
8:00 Key Concepts with Dave Cross
This class is all about understanding how and why things work in Photoshop—before worrying about tools or techniques. This class gives you the big-picture mindset that will help make everything else in Photoshop easier to learn and less overwhelming. Once these concepts click, you’ll stop guessing and start working with confidence.
9:00 Welcome to Photoshop (aka The Photoshop Interface) with Deke McClelland
Using Photoshop is a kind of conversation. You “talk” by clicking and dragging; Photoshop “listens” and tries to do what you want. The language of this conversation is a collection of on-screen words and symbols that we know as the interface.
Like any language, the interface is a bit complex. Which is why Adobe has organized the interface into seven distinct parts: The Home screen, the central image window, the menus (which offer commands and dialog boxes), the panels (Layers, Properties, and so on), the vertical toolbox, the horizontal options bar, and the contextual task bar.
At first (as my description suggests), the interface may seem crazy complicated. As your skills improve, the interface becomes so deceptively familiar that many of us take it for granted.
This is your chance to take a fresh look at the Photoshop interface and understand how its distinct parts work together to anticipate your needs.
10:00 A Photoshop Glossary: Demystifying “Photoshop Speak” with Jan Kabili
Have you ever felt that Photoshop has a language of its own––a language that includes important terms you’d like to understand better? Well, you’re not the only one. Most of us have run into terminology we didn’t fully understand at some point in our Photoshop learning curve. This class is designed to help you with that.
We’ve identified some terms that you need to know to become an effective Photoshop user, but that may not be completely clear on their face. In this user-friendly class you’ll learn what essential terms like masking really mean. You’ll see clear, practical examples that illustrate fundamental concepts like non-destructive editing. And you’ll get help decoding proprietary names of often-used features, like Blend modes and Smart Filters. Among the terms we’ll cover in this class are:
Non-destructive editing
Compositing
Masking
Blend modes
Layer Effects
Smart filters
These and other terms will be broken down for you so that you can feel comfortable using them yourself. By the end of this class, you’ll have a better understanding of fundamental Photoshop terminology, and you’ll be able to “speak Photoshop” with anyone.
11:00 The Photoshop Orientation with Glyn Dewis
Noon: Live Q&A Zoom Call with B&H Photo
1:00 Tackling the Toolbar: A No Sweat Guide to Making Sense of Photoshop’s Toolbox with Khara Plicanic
Navigate the Toolbar and understand tool groupings
Use the Options Bar to control tool behavior
Recognize when different tools accomplish the same goal
Let go of the myth that you must learn every tool
Build confidence by focusing on what actually matters
2:00 Open Sesame! — Every Way to Get Images Into Photoshop (Without Losing Your Mind) with Kirk Nelson
Before you can edit an image, you have to get it into Photoshop — and surprisingly, there are a lot of ways to do that. Some are obvious, some are hidden, and some can cause real confusion if your system settings aren’t playing nicely. In this foundational session, we’ll walk through every common method of opening images and explain when (and why) you’d choose one over another.
We’ll start with the basics, including File > Open, drag-and-drop, and double-clicking files from your computer. Then we’ll tackle one of the most common beginner frustrations: file association problems — when images open in the “wrong” app or refuse to open in Photoshop at all.
From there, we’ll briefly explore how Adobe Bridge and Lightroom fit into the workflow, why many photographers use them as gateways into Photoshop, and how they differ in purpose (without stepping on the sessions dedicated to them).
What you’ll learn:
By the end of this class, getting images into Photoshop will feel effortless — not like the first obstacle of the day.
3:00 Lightroom or Photoshop (or Both)? with Matt Kloskowski
This class will help you figure out when Lightroom is enough, when Photoshop makes sense, and how to stop bouncing between tools without a clear reason. You’ll learn how to choose the right tool for the job based on what you’re trying to fix, not what you “could" do. The goal at the end is simpler decisions, faster edits, and a repeatable workflow.
You'll learn:
When Lightroom can fully finish a photo - and when it can’t.
The specific edits that Photoshop is better for.
How to combine Lightroom and Photoshop without overcomplicating your workflow.
4:00 Working with Panels with Tim Grey
The Photoshop interface is highly customizable, allowing you to choose which panels are visible versus hidden, and how those panels are arranged within the larger interface. This makes it possible for you to tailor the panel configuration to your specific needs, including creating and saving custom configurations for specific tasks. There are literally dozens of panels available, most of which you'll probably never need. But there are also panels that can be tremendously helpful for particular tasks. By creating a saved workspace with the panels you want available at various stages of your workflow, you can activate a saved workspace at any time. This class will show you how to leverage the full power of panel configuration in Photoshop.
You'll learn:
How to reveal the panels that are most helpful to you, and hide those you don't need
The various options for positioning and docking panels to reduce clutter and improve efficiency
Options for saving and resetting saved workspaces for specific panel configurations
5:00 Saving Your Work with Nigel French
Saving your work in Photoshop can feel confusing at first, but understanding it early will save you time, stress, and lost files. This session focuses on the essentials of saving, helping you make smart choices about file formats, versions, and image quality from the very start. You’ll learn not just which buttons to click, but why different saving options exist and when to use them. Whether you’re designing for print, web, or social media, this session gives you a clear foundation you can build on as your skills grow. By the end, you’ll feel confident that your work is saved correctly, efficiently, and ready for whatever comes next.
· you will learn the difference between Save, Save As, and Save a Copy, and when each one matters
· you will learn how common file formats like PSD, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF are used and what they’re best for
· you will learn how to avoid common beginner mistakes that can permanently flatten or degrade your images
Day 2: Tuesday, February 24th

This class shows you why non-destructive editing matters—and how to actually use it in real-world projects.
10:00 Creating New Documents with Jan Kabili
The first step in many Photoshop workflows is to create a new blank document using the settings in the New Document window. It’s important for you to be able to work through those settings in an informed way whenever you want to start a project with a new document.
This class is an in-depth look at the settings and controls in the New Document window. We’ll walk you through those settings with practical examples for online and print workflows. The focus of the class will be on essential settings like image size, image resolution, and color mode.

3:00 Removing Distractions with Tim Grey
Blemishes and distractions in a photo can distract from the key subject in the photo and significantly reduce the perceived quality of an image. You may have noticed, for example, that once you notice a distraction in an image you have difficulty pulling your attention away to focus on the key subject. It is difficult to enjoy an image of a beautiful sunset if there are power lines going across the middle of the scene. In this class you'll learn powerful techniques for easily removing dust spots, blemishes, distractions, and other unwanted elements from your images. From simple tools and cropping to more powerful features that leverage AI, you'll learn how to eliminate distractions from your images with ease.

By the end of this class, you should be able to confidently choose colors using a variety of color features in Photoshop.
5:00 Working with Type with Deke McClelland
The very name “Photoshop” inspires many of us to imagine that its main purpose is to edit photographs. But it’s more accurate to think of Photoshop as an exceedingly flexible, still photography-based design program.
For example, let’s imagine that you want to integrate one or more photographs with type. That sounds like a job for Illustrator, right? Or maybe InDesign? Actually, it’s much easier and more efficient to stay inside Photoshop.
Type in Photoshop offers all the formatting options you might reasonably need. Type in Photoshop is forever editable, and scalable to meet the needs of even the most high-resolution images. Type in Photoshop can weave in and out of any and all photographic elements, whether objects, people, or hair.
In short, when you think “type + photographic artwork,” think Photoshop.
In this session, you will learn:
The basics of using the Type tool
How type scales automatically with an image, so it remains forever smooth
The difference between point and paragraph text
How to format type from the options bar

1:00 Filters Without Fear — How and When to Use Photoshop Filters with Kirk Nelson
Photoshop filters can feel like a mysterious grab bag of sliders, previews, and “what did I just do?” moments. In this session, we’re going to demystify filters and turn them into reliable, creative tools you’ll actually want to use — without wrecking your image or painting yourself into a corner.
We’ll start by breaking down what filters really are, where they live in Photoshop, and why some filters permanently change pixels while others give you flexibility and control. You’ll learn when filters are helpful, when they’re overkill, and how professionals use them subtly rather than destructively.
A major focus of this class is understanding Smart Filters — what makes them different, when to use them, and how they allow you to edit, mask, and fine-tune your effects long after you’ve applied them. If you’ve ever wondered why experienced users almost never apply filters directly to a layer, this class will make that click.
What you’ll learn:
By the end, filters will feel less like a gamble — and more like a creative advantage.

Sharpening is an often misunderstood step. This course breaks down what sharpening really is, what it is not, and how to use it in a controlled, intentional way. Rather than chasing a “crisp” look that can quickly turn harsh or noisy, you’ll learn how sharpening works at a technical and visual level. The session focuses on perceived sharpness, helping you understand how sharpening interacts with resolution, viewing distance, and output. You’ll also see why sharpening cannot fix poor focus or motion blur, and how to avoid common mistakes that permanently damage image quality. By the end of the course, sharpening will feel less like guesswork and more like a deliberate finishing step that enhances your image without calling attention to itself.
· you will learn what sharpening actually does to an image, and why it’s different from increasing contrast
· you will learn when to apply sharpening in your workflow
· you will learn how to apply sharpening selectively so important details stand out without introducing halos or noise
4:00 How to Transform Anything with Colin Smith
Free Transform (Cmd/Ctrl + T) is one of the most useful tools in Photoshop.
In this practical session, Colin Smith shows you how transforming layers goes far beyond simple scaling and rotation. You’ll learn how to reshape, warp, and control your images precisely so they do exactly what you intend. This session breaks down both the core controls and the hidden features that most people never use — even after years in Photoshop.
You’ll learn how to:

Troubleshooting tricks when the Photoshop workspace suddenly goes rogue
Shortcut tricks to speed up your editing + easy ways to remember shortcuts
The magic of creating your own personalized shortcuts
11:00 Introducing Blend Modes with Deke McClelland
Photoshop’s Layers panel allows you to isolate image elements. This way you can modify, say, a person independently of its background. The more you use layers, the more your future self will thank you.
Near the top of the Layers panel (below the word “Kind”), you’ll see “Normal,” “Opacity,” and “Fill.” These are the blending options. And as their name suggests, they allow you to blend the active layer with the layers below.
Opacity and Fill are pretty straightforward. (Don’t worry, I’ll cover them both!) Normal is something different.
Click Normal to reveal a list of 26 blend modes, starting with Dissolve and ending with Luminosity. (Strictly speaking, Normal is not a blend mode; it is the same as turning the blend mode off.) Each blend mode creates a special interaction, one that you can change anytime you like.
It's tempting to imagine that you should master each and every blend mode. But as you’ll see, a few blend modes are more useful than the others. And these few modes are essential to your understanding of Photoshop.
In this session, you will learn:
How to use the Opacity and Fill options
How to preview a blend mode on-the-fly
How and why the blend modes are organized into six groups
How to use the primary three blend modes: Multiply, Screen, and Overlay
How to use the secondary modes: Color and Luminosity
What to do if a blend mode doesn’t quite meet your expectations
